The Cafe Boulevard in Bilbao reopens its doors!

03/19/2010 | eitb.com

After being closed for five years, The Cafe Boulevard in Bilbao (Biscay) will open its doors on March 25th.

This art-deco cafe first opened its doors in 1871 and closed in 2006. The new Boulevard opening on March 25th, will keep its original appearance but will include a cocktail bar of avantgarde design.

The Cafe Boulevard is located on the Arenal promenade next to the Arriaga theatre, and was opened in 1871 by the Pérez Yarza family.

This is Bilbao’s oldest cafe, and has remained operational following considerable vicissitudes and reform work, which have changed its appearance down through the years.

The Cafe Boulevard is famous for its tertulias or cafe get-togethers, to which it has always lent its support, to the extent that its initials, C.B. have been interpreted as ‘Convivencia Bilbaína’ or Living Together in Bilbao.

Txakoli? – excuse me?

Txakoli is the light white wine found in the Basque Country that goes ever so well with the bite size morsels we call “pintxos”.  As we prepare for our September 12, 2009 Basque in the Glory Tour, an interesting article about this wine just came out in the San Francisco Chronicle.  Enjoy!

Agur,

Alex
