Our day begins on the beach in the Basque Coast Geopark. On today’s walk we alternate between cliffside paths, rolling green farmland, and views of the sea. As we leave Zumaia we soon begin our ascent to the small town of Elorriaga, where we pass the Church of San Pedro. We continue our path, which dips into a valley before beginning to ascend again. Finally we reach the Itziar Church at the top of the ridge, where we can take in the glorious views of the landscapes around us.
But before we arrive in Deba, it’s time for another gourmet picnic lunch!
After a quick rest, we begin our descent into Deba, dropping down into the old town, centered around the Church of Santa María, which serves as a focal point and an architectural highlight. The structure dates back to the 14th century. The church is a masterpiece of Basque Gothic, featuring pointed arches, ribbed vaults, a cloiser and intricate stone carvings. Its polychrome doorway is particularly impressive.
The streets radiate from the church, creating a maze of narrow alleys and pedestrian-friendly pathways. The streets are lined with a variety of local shops, boutiques, and small businesses where you can find artisanal products and handicrafts. The old town also features small squares and plazas, where locals and visitors gather to relax, socialize, or enjoy a meal at one of the cafes or restaurants. These squares often host cultural events and festivals, offering a glimpse into the vibrant community life of Deba.
After exploring the streets of Deba it is time to return to our accommodations in Getaria for our evening meeting. After that we head to bed to prepare for tomorrow.
