Today is our first day in Spain. Following the coast, we walk from A Guarda to Oia. The Camino along the Atlantic coast in Galicia offers a unique blend of coastal beauty and cultural heritage.
Oia and its monastery
Oia, a picturesque coastal village in the province of Pontevedra, Galicia, Spain, is a destination of tranquil beauty and historical significance. Nestled between the rugged cliffs and the Atlantic Ocean, Oia offers a serene coastal landscape.
One of Oia’s most prominent landmarks is the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Oia, a stunning example of Cistercian architecture. Founded in the 12th century, the monastery played a vital role in the religious and economic life of the region. Its robust stone walls and peaceful cloisters reflect the monastic life that once thrived here.
The village itself exudes a rustic charm with its traditional Galician houses, narrow streets, and scenic waterfront. The Atlantic Ocean’s relentless waves crashing against the rocky shore create a dramatic and captivating backdrop.
Lunches and picnics
Weather permitting, we enjoy a gourmet picnic every day on the trail for lunch. We have discovered that there is something about the outdoors, great company and walking several miles before lunch that make our spreads memorable!
