These are the new requirements to request your Compostela in 2025 at the Pilgrim’s Office in Santiago de Compostela. Please, be careful as the English version on the Pilgrim’s Office website does not match the Spanish one, and can lead to confusion. The official and correct requirements are the ones in Spanish and are described below.
Don’t worry, it’s all good news and they (arguably) make more sense.
What has changed in the requirements to obtain the Compostela?
The main difference between 2024 and 2025 is: Flexibility regarding the required minimum 100 kilometers
In 2024: To request your Compostela, pilgrims had to walk a minimum of 100 continuous kilometers to the Cathedral in Santiago de Compostela on any official Camino route.
In 2025: To request your Compostela, pilgrims have to walk a minimum of 100 kilometers on any of the official Camino routes, but these do not have to be continuous. They must, however, walk the last stage of their route into Santiago de Compostela.
Examples of what you can do now:
- Walk from Pamplona to Logroño, then jump ahead to O Pedrouzo and walk the last 20 kilometers to Santiago de Compostela.
- Start in Sarria and walk the last 117 kilometers skipping the stage between Melide and Arzúa.
Requirements for pilgrims on foot (walking) or on horse in 2025:
- Walk or ride an aggregate of at least 100 kilometers.
- Walk or ride the last stage into Santiago de Compostela to the cathedral. This requirement ensures that the pilgrimage maintains its spiritual and traditional meaning.
- Get two stamps per day in their pilgrim credential. Dated stamps validate your journey for the Pilgrim’s Office, confirming you’ve walked the Camino. These stamps are widely available at churches and many businesses along the route, including hotels and cafés.
Requirements for pilgrims on bike in 2025:
- As in the case of walking and horseback, ride an aggregate of 200 kilometers along any of the official Camino routes.
- You must ride the last stage into Santiago de Compostela.
- You must get two stamps per day.
- Ebikes/electric bikes do not qualify for a Compostela.
The process to register for your Compostela.
- To open the online registration form, scan the QR code in your Pilgrim Credential.
- Alternatively, you can visit https://oficinadelperegrino.com/en/sigle-register/ directly to register.
- Once you’ve completed the registration, the system will generate a personal alphanumeric code and a QR code (see image below).
- These will appear on the device you’re using and will also be sent to your email.
- Make sure to write the registration date and your alphanumeric code in your Pilgrim Credential.
- Then, continue filling out the rest of the Pilgrim Credential as usual.
