FAQs About the Camino Frances

The Camino Francés (French Way) is the most popular route of the Camino de Santiago, the ancient pilgrimage path leading to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Spain, where the remains of Saint James are believed to rest. It is a historic and spiritual dating back 1200 years that has been traveled by millions of pilgrims. The trail crosses Spain from east to west, and attracts people of all faiths from around the world.

The Camino Francés spans approximately 780 kilometers (485 miles) from start to finish. This length makes it a full journey across northern Spain, from the foothills of the French Pyrenees to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. Along the way, it crosses four autonomous regions of Spain: Navarra, La Rioja, Castilla y León, and Galicia, each with its own unique culture, heritage, and cuisine. Pilgrims who complete the full route often consider it not just a physical accomplishment but also an emotional and spiritual journey.

The unofficial starting point of the Camino Francés is Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, a small and charming town in the French Pyrenees. From there, the route crosses into Spain, and then makes its way west, visiting monumental cities like Pamplona, Burgos, and León, before reaching Santiago de Compostela.

On our Camino Horizons Tour, we allow you to see the whole Camino, walk short scenic sections and visit the above-mentioned cities.

Our Chapter 1 Tour allows you to walk the first stages, starting at the Monastery in Roncesvalles and ending in Logroño. Our Chapter 2 Tour continues the journey west, starting in Logroño and ending in the medieval town of Carrión de los Condes on the Meseta.

And our Camino de Santiago Tour and A Kinder Camino Tour allow you to walk the last stages of the Camino Francés and end in Santiago de Compostela.

Walking the entire Camino Francés typically takes 4 to 6 weeks, depending on individual pace and the number of rest days taken. Most pilgrims walk an average of 20–25 kilometers (12–15 miles) per day, which is a manageable distance for those in reasonable physical condition. For those short on time, it's also common to walk only a section of the route. The last 100 kilometers, starting in Sarria, is the minimum distance required to earn the Compostela certificate.
