Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela
Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela

Santiago de Compostela, is renowned as the final destination of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage. The city’s historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a maze of narrow streets, charming squares, and well-preserved medieval buildings.

At its heart stands the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, one of the most important religious structures in Christendom and Spain. Built over the tomb of Saint James the Apostle, the cathedral dates back to the 11th century, showcasing Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque architectural styles. Its grand façade, Obradoiro, and the intricately decorated Portico of Glory are architectural highlights.

The cathedral is famous for the Botafumeiro, a giant thurible used during special ceremonies, and the Pilgrim’s Mass, held daily to welcome pilgrims completing their journey. Inside, the crypt of Saint James and the high altar are central points of devotion. The cathedral and the city both serve as spiritual and cultural hubs, attracting visitors from around the world to experience their historical and religious significance.
