Arcade to Pontevedra

Vigo to Arcade

Day 11

Accommodations: Pontevedra (B)

Walking: 13 km / 8 mi

This morning you leave Arcade to Pontevedra. Shortly after you leave town you come upon a small stone bridge into Pontesampaio. After maybe dipping your toes in the water and enjoying the cool water, continue through Pontesampaio, the site of the most celebrated battle in Galicia during the Spanish War of Independence in 1809. At the bridge of Pontesampio, an irregular force of Spanish soldiers and armed locals defeated the 10,000-strong French army that was marching towards the strategic city of Vigo. Less than a month later, the last French soldier had retreated from Galician soil.

Along this part of the Camino, signage may become sparse and hard to spot, so be sure to consult your detailed Fresco Tours maps to make sure you’re walking in the right direction. You continue through the Tomeza Valley and follow the Camino to the small town of Santa Marta where you can get your Pilgrim Passport stamped at the Romanesque church.

Finally, you approach Pontevedra, your home for the night. While you explore the town, before dinner you can visit La Peregrina, the church dedicated to the Virgin who, according to tradition, guided pilgrims from Bayona, in the south-west of the province of Pontevedra, to Santiago de Compostela. With some time to relax, if you’re feeling sore, you can consult one of your Fresco Tours maps to find our massage recommendations nearby!
