Viana do Castelo to Vila Praia de Ancora

Esposende to Viana do Castelo

Day 5

Accommodations: Vila Praia de Ancora (B)

Walking: 20 km / 12 mi

Having enjoyed breakfast it is time to depart from Viana do Castelo to Vila Praia de Ancora. On the way out you will pass along the Passeio das Mordomas de Romaria, named after the woman who organizes Viana’s annual celebrations for Our Lady of Agony. As you continue walking out of the city you will begin to ascend a hill lined with residences, where you can enjoy distant views of Viana’s shipyard cranes.

Further along the path the suburbs of Viana will come to an end and you will enter a patch of woodland separating them from the neighboring village of Areosa. As you continue up the narrow cobble roads you can enjoy more beautiful views of the ocean below and the lush surrounding landscape. The yellow arrows will continue to guide you to a beautiful stream before Quinta da Boa Viagem where you can dip your toes in the water and relax with the babbling water in the background. If you’re getting hungry or need the bathroom don’t forget to consult your Fresco Tours maps for our recommendations in the area.

After a relaxing break you will continue walking from Viana do Castelo to Vila Praia de Ancora through the village of Carreço where you will pass a eucalyptus plantation. You will smell it from a kilometer away! As you keep walking you will get to enjoy the serene natural atmosphere on the Camino, including green ponds and small waterfalls before you cross the River Cabanas. On the path ahead you will pass a small chapel for Our Lady of Amparo before arriving in Vila Praia de Ancora. If your feet are getting tired be sure to consult our recommendations for a massage or spa nearby before you head to dinner.
