The medieval city of Tui on the Camino Portugués.
Tui

Tui, a charming town on the Spanish-Portuguese border, is a significant starting point for many pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago. Nestled on the banks of the Miño River, Tui is renowned for its blend of historical and cultural heritage. The town’s centerpiece is the Cathedral of Santa María, a magnificent Romanesque-Gothic structure dating back to the 12th century. This impressive cathedral, with its fortress-like appearance, offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape from its towers.

Wandering through Tui’s narrow, cobbled streets, you’ll encounter a variety of well-preserved medieval buildings, charming plazas, and quaint shops. The town’s rich history is evident in landmarks such as the Convent of Santo Domingo and the old Jewish Quarter, which reflect Tui’s diverse cultural influences over the centuries.

Tui also serves as a gateway to the natural beauty of the Galicia region. The nearby Monte Aloia Natural Park provides opportunities for hiking and enjoying panoramic views of the Miño Valley. As a starting point for the Portuguese Way of the Camino de Santiago, Tui offers pilgrims a perfect blend of spiritual, historical, and natural attractions. Whether you are embarking on the Camino or simply exploring Galicia, Tui’s unique charm and rich heritage make it an unforgettable destination.
