Join us on the Kinder (Gentler) Camino Portgués with Fresco Tours! Our tour starts in Guimaraes, birthplace of Portugal, with a briefing on our upcoming 10 days on the Camino de Santiago where we will meet our Fresco Tours guides and the rest of our group. Following an overview of our journey, we’ll explore Guimarães, renowned as the birthplace of Portugal. Accompanied by a local historian, you’ll
explore the historic district, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Guimarães is often referred to as the “birthplace of Portugal” because it was here that the first King of Portugal, Afonso Henriques, was born and established the country’s independence from the Kingdom of León in the 12th century. The iconic Castle of Guimarães, perched on a hill overlooking the city, symbolizes this historical importance.
One of Guimarães’ most iconic landmarks is its medieval castle, erected in the 10th century
on the orders of Mumadona Dias to safeguard the monastery from Moorish and Norse
attacks. Expanded in the 11th century, it became the royal residence in 1139 upon Portugal’s
independence from the Kingdom of León. It was within these walls that the first King of
Portugal, Afonso Henriques, was born in 1100.
Beyond the castle, the city boasts charming cobblestone streets lined with medieval buildings, churches, and squares. The Palace of the Dukes of Braganza is another notable landmark, showcasing a mix of Gothic, Manueline, and Renaissance architectural styles.
After an engaging city tour, it’s time to indulge in the local cuisine for dinner before retiring for
a restful night’s sleep in anticipation of our first day on the trail tomorrow!
