O Cebreiro to Triacastela

León to Iron Cross

Day 3

Accommodations: Sarria (B, L, D)

Walking: 21 km / 13 mi

Today is one of our longer days, from O Cebreiro to Triacastela, but well worth the effort! After leaving O Cebreiro we walk up to the Alto do Poio, at an altitude of approximately 1,330 meters (4,363 feet), making it one of the highest points along the Camino Francés. Its elevated location offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The one-of-a-kind viewpoint and symbolic importance of Alto do Poio make it a memorable place for pilgrims, and offer the perfect spot to get a stamp in our Pilgrim Passports. Plus, who doesn’t love a coffee with a stunning view?

About seven miles down the hill we walk right to one of our favorite picnic places, where a Fresco Tours gourmet picnic awaits!

We continue along the Camino after lunch and head down the other side of the mountain to Triacastela, a small town nestled in a verdant valley surrounded by rolling hills. The village has charming stone houses, narrow streets, and a welcoming atmosphere. The name Triacastela translates loosely to “three castles,” in reference to the three Norman castles said to have existed in the town, although nothing remains of them today. Instead, Celtic castros (bronze-age stone settlements) dot the landscape very close to the town, the best explanation for the town’s name. Nevertheless, the name Triacastela has endured.

After a full day of beautiful views, rewarding walks, and local cuisine, your Fresco Tours guides will sit down with the group for the evening meeting to talk about tomorrow’s walk, and explain the map, including the terrain, the support vehicle checkpoints, and our picnic spot, to get us ready for the next day.
