Today’s the last day of our adventure together, but fret not – we’re going out with a bang! Let’s fuel up for a bittersweet day with a delicious breakfast.
Our morning unfolds with a guided tour of the magnificent Santiago Cathedral and its surroundings. Your local art historian, a true Santiago expert, will lead the way. As we step into the historic city, the Cathedral is just a short stroll away.
Welcome to Kilometer Zero:
Brace yourself for a moment of pure pilgrimage magic – Praza do Obradoiro square. This square is often called “Kilometer Zero” because it marks the official end point for countless pilgrims like you! The square boasts some of Santiago’s most stunning buildings: the Plateresque-style Hostal de los Reyes Católicos (a former royal hospital), the Palacio de Rajoy, the Colegio de San Jerónimo, and of course, the awe-inspiring Cathedral.
A Cathedral Steeped in History:
Our guide will unveil the fascinating story of the Cathedral’s evolution. From its humble beginnings as a 9th-century chapel to the grandeur you see today, it’s a journey through time. As you will learn from our local guide, this structure has undergone several transformations over the centuries: from a pre-Roman necropolis to the early 9th-century original chapel, to the remarkable 12th-century Romanesque cathedral with its intricately carved west door, Pórtico de la Gloria, to the 18th-century Obradoiro facade.
The grandeur of this destination, combined with the incredible journey you’ve undertaken, makes every step worthwhile!
The Final Farewell:
Following the tour, feel free to attend the Pilgrim’s Mass at noon if it interests you. We sincerely hope you’ve had a fantastic experience with Fresco Tours, and we look forward to welcoming you back for another adventure soon!
