This morning’s leg of our journey takes us from Cesantes to Pontevedra. We’ll depart Cesantes by crossing the monumental Ponte Sampaio bridge, steeped in history. This iconic landmark witnessed a pivotal battle during the Spanish War of Independence in 1809. A ragtag force of Spanish soldiers and local citizens courageously halted and defeated a formidable French army of 10,000 troops marching towards Vigo. This victory ultimately led to the French withdrawal from Galician soil within a month.
The trail
Our journey continues through the picturesque Tomeza Valley. We’ll arrive at a charming spot by Fonte Figuerrido, where we’ll savor a delicious gourmet picnic featuring local cheeses. After lunch, we’ll resume our walk towards Pontevedra, passing by the humble Chapel of Santa Marta. This chapel honors the biblical Martha, known for her hospitality and culinary skills. It’s typically open, offering a self-service stamp for your pilgrim credential.
Pontevedra
Our journey culminates in Pontevedra, our charming home for the next two nights. After checking into our hotel, we’ll have time to explore this captivating town before dinner. Nestled in Galicia, Spain, Pontevedra boasts a rich tapestry of history. Wander its well-preserved medieval streets, a haven for pedestrians, and soak in the vibrant cultural scene. The historic center is a treasure trove, brimming with picturesque plazas like Plaza de la Peregrina and iconic landmarks such as the Church of Santa María la Mayor. But the crown jewel is undoubtedly the Church of La Peregrina. Shaped like a scallop shell from above and dedicated to Our Lady and the patron saint of the Camino Portugués, it’s a true pilgrimage landmark. After indulging in delicious local cuisine and a glass or two of refreshing Albariño wine, we’ll retire for the evening, ready to conquer tomorrow’s adventure.
