The Camino del Norte is one of the most scenic and rewarding routes of the Camino de Santiago, winding along the beautiful northern coast of Spain. But when is the best time to walk this Camino trail?
The answer is simple: on one of our Basque in the Glory tour dates, because we always run our Camino del Norte tours when the weather is best! However, if you would like a bit more information about the weather in the Basque Country, here’s a more detailed look at each season to help you pack your bag.
Highlights of the Northern of the Camino by season
Spring (March to May)
Spring in the Basque Country offers a mild climate, making it a great time to walk the Camino del Norte. Temperatures during these months are typically cool but comfortable, what some hikers consider perfect hiking weather! This is the season when the landscape is also at its most vibrant, with flowers blooming and nature bursting alive. Expect longer days as we make our way to summer, and a little more rain than in the summer months. Remember: like in most places, spring can be somewhat unpredictable, which adds to the excitement of your adventure.
Summer (June to August)
Warmer and Longer Days
Summer is peak season on the Northern Camino de Santiago, attracting more pilgrims than other seasons. The weather tends to be pleasantly warm and sunny. Bear in mind that there may also be the odd warmer day, and that the Basque Country is emerald green year-round (occasional rain). The longer days, with up to 16 hours of daylight in June and July, give you plenty of time to enjoy the stunning coastal views, golden beaches, and charming towns along the way.
Early Fall (September to October)
Perfect for Serenity and Stunning Scenery
For many, fall is the best time to walk the Camino del Norte. The weather is similar to the spring, with cooler days and temperatures below 70 ºF, making it perfect for hiking. The fall colors transform the landscape into a painter’s palette, with the forests, hills, and vineyards bursting into shades of red, orange, and gold. September and October are ideal months for those who want a balance of pleasant weather and a more intimate pilgrimage.
Late Fall and Winter (November to February)
For the Adventurous Pilgrim
Sadly, we do not offer winter tours on the Camino del Norte: Basque in the Glory tour. Winter on the Camino del Norte is a challenge. With colder temperatures, much shorter days, and lots of rain, winter presents a harsher environment for pilgrims. Pilgrim services along the way can likewise be closed for the season. Winter weather can also be unpredictable, with rain, wind, and occasional snow in the higher elevations. If you’re seeking a truly solitary pilgrimage, winter can offer a sense of serenity and personal growth, but it’s important to be prepared.
