One of Portugalete’s most iconic landmarks, the Vizcaya Bridge is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a marvel of engineering. Built in the late 19th century, it is the world’s oldest transporter bridge and still operates today, ferrying passengers and vehicles across the Nervión River.

Wander through the narrow streets and alleys of Portugalete’s historic Old Town, where you’ll find charming squares, centuries-old buildings, and traditional Basque architecture. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore hidden gems such as Plaza del Solar and Plaza del Cristo.

Finally the imposing Gothic church of Basilica of Santa Maria, located in the heart of Portugalete, is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Its intricate facade and beautiful interior, including stunning stained glass windows and ornate altars, make it a must-visit for architecture and history enthusiasts.

Near the church of Santa Maria we will find the ancient tower house osf Salazar. From the 15th century and belonging to the Salazar lineage, was built at the end of the 15th century and rebuilt in 1958 by the architect Joaquín de Yrízar, after the fire of 1934. The last reconstruction took place in 2003 when it was acquired by the City Council to be used for cultural purposes.

Inside, it houses a museum with exhibits and documents about the history of Portugalete and Salazar, a room for temporary exhibitions, and a restaurant.

Whether you’re fascinated by history, captivated by architecture, or simply seeking a relaxing getaway, Portugalete offers a wealth of experiences to delight every traveler.
