Having packed up we will shuttle back to Arteara and continue to climb northward along the same trail used for hundreds of years to move around the island. Our stage goes from Arteara to Tunte. As we make our way through the gorge, we come upon the charming village of Fataga. The village is situated in a valley in the interior of the island, surrounded by mountains and characterized by its traditional Canarian architecture, with charming stone houses, whitewashed walls, narrow streets, and a relaxed atmosphere.
We continue to work our way up and after tucking into a signature Fresco Tours gourmet picnic lunch, we come to the town of Tunte, another village located in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana surrounded by mountains and valleys. The village of Tunte itself is relatively small, but it has a few notable attractions worth visiting. One of the main sites is the Church of San Bartolomé, a beautiful 17th-century church with a simple yet elegant architectural style. This church is important in Camino de Santiago lore as it houses the original statue of Santiago, brought by the sailors after their sea-wreck. It also boasts a Holy Door, which grants plenary indulgence to pilgrims on holy years.
Having explored the hillside towns we will find the perfect spot to enjoy a gourmet picnic made with fresh local ingredients.
After our second day of walking we will head to Cruz de Tejeda to sample more local fare for dinner. Our Fresco Tours guides will sit down with the group for the evening meeting where we will talk about tomorrow’s walk, and explain the map, including the terrain, the checkpoints of the support vehicle, and our picnic point, to get us ready for the next day.
