Today, we leave Tunte after breakfast and follow the trail up into the heart of the island. Our stage goes from Tunte to Cruz de Tejeda. Although this stage is challenging, the spectacular views are worth every step of the climb.
After a few kilometers we will reach Roque Nublo, a towering rock formation and the island’s central landmark in the municipality of Tejada. The Roque Nublo is a volcanic rock formation that stands at an impressive height of approximately 80 meters (262 feet) in the rural park named after the formation. The name “Roque Nublo” translates to “Clouded Rock” in English and references the frequent presence of clouds that surround its peak. The rock formation is believed to be the remnants of a volcanic vent that eroded over millions of years, leaving behind a distinctive monolith. Roque Nublo has become an iconic symbol of Gran Canaria and is often featured in photographs and postcards showcasing the island’s natural beauty.
Roque Nublo holds cultural and spiritual significance to the indigenous inhabitants of Gran Canaria, the Guanches. It was considered a sacred site for the Guanche people, who inhabited the island before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors. Even today, the site is occasionally used for cultural and spiritual ceremonies by the local Canarian population.
Although the Roque Nublo is not on the Camino de Santiago, we will be rewarded with views of this impressive site during much of today’s stage.
After a challenging day on the trail, we will enjoy a gourmet picnic and head back to our hotel to relax in the evening.
