One of the Most Memorable Experiences of Our Lives

Dear Alex, The “Kinder Camino” was one of the most memorable experiences of our lives! We had planned to do the regular Camino with Fresco Tours, but it was already filled for May, so we signed up for the first-ever “Kinder Camino,” a good decision in hindsight because the slightly-shorter walking distances on the Camino provided more opportunities for tours with Jason of monasteries, churches, and other sites off the trail. May in Galicia had its share of rain and cool temperatures (lows in the 40s to mid-50s F, highs in the 50s-mid-60s F), but this was good hiking weather and produced a verdant countryside covered in spring flowers. Just be sure to bring waterproof trail runners or hiking shoes, layers for warmth, and good rain gear. A hallmark of our trip with Fresco Tours was the attentiveness to the individual tastes and needs of group members. The two of us started our trip to Spain in San Sebastian and Bilbao and then took the train to Leon where we met the rest of our group. Alissa, Fresco tour s office manager, got our train tickets for us and arranged an extra night at the hotel in Leon, a beautiful and historic city to explore; she answered any questions we had before the trip began. Once on the Camino, Jason made sure that individual dietary tastes were taken into account. We had four pescatarians in our group and five carnivores, not all of whom liked fish. Jason ensured that each meal included a variety of dishes delicious feasts of salads, main courses, Galician cheeses, wines and desserts that everyone could enjoy. Our favorite meal was the signature dish of Galicia: octopus served with garlic and chilies at a pulperia along the way. The country inns we stayed in were charming, the stone churches and villages along the Camino beautiful in their rustic simplicity, and Pepe’s careful driving (and chocolate!) much appreciated. We loved the support and wealth of information about the Camino, life in Galicia, Spanish political and cultural history, gardening, books, etc. that Jason and Roberto provided. Conversations at meals and along the Camino were animated. Our group bonded from day one. Walking the Camino couldn t have been a more invigorating and inspiring experience-one that we will always cherish. Thanks too for the CD with the photos that Roberto took; we re now going through the hundreds that we took ourselves. We’ve already recommended Fresco Tours to our friends. We hope to join you again for another tour in the future the Portuguése Camino sounds wonderful. All the best, Nancy and Rob
