Getting There & Back

How do I get to the E-Biking the Camino de Santiago Tour starting point?

León, Spain, is the official starting point of the Camino de Santiago on Wheels and can be reached via train, or bus. Traveling from either Madrid or Bilbao, one can choose between the train (RENFE) or the bus (ALSA). For a sample of prices and timetables, please see:

RENFE Train – Madrid to Leon

ALSA Bus – Madrid to Leon

How can I purchase my bus or train tickets beforehand?

Train tickets can be purchased online through RENFESome routes cannot be purchased until 3-4 weeks prior to departure – please be patient. Please note that the site tends to run slowly on weekends due to heavy demand.

If you would like information on trains in Spain (different types of fares, security, food on board, etc.), Trainline is a wonderful resource. You can also buy your tickets on this site if you find the RENFE site to be confusing (just remember that tickets are not available until 3-4 weeks before departure).

Bus tickets can be purchased on ALSA .

How do I get from Santiago de Compostela (where the tour ends) to Madrid and other cities?

There are several fast trains a day between Santiago and Madrid (approximately 3-4 hours). Traveling by train is the most convenient way, especially if you are planning to do some sightseeing in Madrid, as it takes you straight to the city center. If you are looking to fly, there are multiple domestic flights a day between Santiago and Madrid, as well as other major Spanish cities.

How do I get from Madrid Airport to the city center

You can easily find taxis as you exit the terminal. It takes about 25-30 minutes to get to the city center (or the Atocha or Chamartin train stations) and the price is around €35.

On the Road

Can I bring my own biking gear with me?

Absolutely. Although we will provide a biking helmet suitable for you, you are welcome to bring your own, along with any other gear you may feel you require. As we will be riding electric (pedal assisted) eBikes, some people find comfortable footwear enough. The same applies to other accessories, such as clip-in pedals; you can bring your own or rent them from us.

What is a typical day like on the E-Biking the Camino de Santiago Tour?

After breakfast, we set off from our hotel and get the blood flowing on our morning ride. Along the stage, there will be a couple check points to make sure that everything is OK. Your guides will also encourage coffee breaks to power up and admire interesting sites. After about 3 hours of riding, we will have lunch. Weather permitting, you will enjoy a complete gourmet picnic prepared with the freshest local ingredients. After dessert, you will make your way to the hotel for a well- deserved rest.

We finish our day with a glass of tinto and a feast of the local gastronomy. We then retire for the night and get ready to do it again! On some afternoons, we have planned excursions, such as a visit to an ancient monastery or perhaps a massage!

Does the group stop for breaks on the E-Biking the Camino de Santiago Tour?

Your guides will offer and encourage breaks everyday. This is not a race and we want you to enjoy the route We also like to stop with our clients for a coffee or cerveza along the way, to enjoy the journey and take everything in!

What is the terrain like on the Camino de Santiago on Wheels Tour?

The route follows small country paved roads surrounded by farmland and rolling green hills. There are a couple of  significant climbs and descents. Check the stages’ profile for more information.

What is the change in elevation on the E-Biking the Camino de Santiago Tour?

We will be cycling from León to Santiago de Compostela, the last 349 km of the Camino de Santiago. For a detailed map of the distances between towns along the Camino and their respective altitudes, please click here

How many kilometers are cycled each day on the E-Biking the Camino de Santiago Tour?

The number of kilometers scheduled for each day varies from 50 km to 70 km. We have designed this tour to complete the last 354 km to Santiago. To be eligible for the Compostela certificate, you have to cycle the last 200 km.

Is it easy to follow the route?

You can ride alongside your guide or, if you prefer riding alone, you can use your cellphone or GPS to navigate the route that we’ll share with you.

Will I be able to do laundry on the E-Biking the Camino de Santiago Tour?

Some hotels on Camino de Santiago on Wheels offer laundry services on the premises and there are also local laundromats. We also recommend that you bring quick-drying clothes that you can handwash and dry overnight at the hotel if all else fails!

What is the weather like on the E-Biking the Camino de Santiago Tour?

Our Camino de Santiago on Wheels covers the last 349 km of the Camino in the northwest regions of Castilla y León and Galicia. Here we enjoy a more temperate climate, and it is generally cooler than other parts of the Camino de Santiago and Spain in the summer.
