Vigo to Arcade

Baiona to Vigo

Day 10

Accommodations: Arcade (B)

Walking: 22 km / 14 mi

Today you walk from Vigo to Arcade. As you leave Vigo after breakfast you walk along the city’s main shopping street, Rúa de Urzaíz. Continue out of town through the hillside villages for several kilometers until you enter the woods.

After a steady climb, the Camino then descends Chan das Pipas hill through more small towns before reaching Redondela. This town is situated just south of the Ria de Vigo, and the estuary hugs the town from the north-west. From the town, you can view the coast and its beaches, as well as the floating barges used to farm mussels and scallops, delicacies of the region. Despite its coastal beauty, Redondela’s main attractions are the two historic train bridges or viaducts that cross over the city. The two rail viaducts that span the town’s sky date roughly from the beginning of the 20th century and are both still in use. Along your journey, your Fresco Tours maps will indicate sites like this that you shouldn’t miss as well as the next bathroom stop, nearest pharmacy, and our favorite places to eat.

Once you have explored the streets of Redondela, it is time to finish today’s journey in the modern summer resort town of Arcade, where local summer revelers flock to to the beaches for seaside fun. Congratulations, you’ve completed the stage Vigo to Arcade!

The town is also home to the yearly ‘Fiesta de la Ostra’ (Oyster Festival) which takes place in spring. Oysters are a local specialty here, as the estuary waters are perfect for their farming. Be sure to try some for dinner before returning to your hotel where your luggage has been transferred, and then head to bed to rest for tomorrow.
