Hopping in the van, we head to this spectacular Spanish coast. Lesser known than the Costa del Sol, this area is far less commercial and still preserves the charm of tiny fishing villages. We start the day with a coastal walk that takes us through protected pine forests. Here we may catch a glimpse of a little fishing boat heading out for sardines or anchovies, just as they have done for centuries! In the evening, we rest our tired legs with a glass of light white wine!

The Costa de la Luz, stretching along the southwestern coast of Spain, is a stunning region known for its golden sandy beaches, vibrant culture, and rich history.

This “Coast of Light” spans the provinces of Cádiz and Huelva, offering pristine beaches that are less crowded than those of the Costa del Sol. The beaches, such as Playa de La Barrosa and Playa de Bolonia, are renowned for their natural beauty, clear waters, and excellent conditions for water sports like surfing and windsurfing.

The region is steeped in history, with Cádiz being one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Western Europe. Here, you can explore ancient ruins, such as the Roman theater, and enjoy the lively atmosphere of its old town, known for its narrow streets and vibrant squares. The annual Carnaval de Cádiz is one of Spain’s most famous carnivals, featuring colorful parades, music, and dancing.

Huelva is known for its connection to Christopher Columbus, with sites like the Monastery of La Rábida, where Columbus planned his voyage to the New World. The town also offers beautiful beaches and the serene Doñana National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its diverse ecosystems and wildlife.

The Costa de la Luz is also famous for its culinary delights, particularly fresh seafood and traditional Andalusian dishes. The region’s sherry wines, especially those from Jerez de la Frontera, are world-renowned and a perfect accompaniment to local cuisine.
