Chillida Leku & Hondarribia

Day 2

Accommodations: Hondarribia (B, L, D)

Walking: 4 km / 2 mi

After our delicious breakfast, we make our way to Hondarribia, where our Camino starts. On route, we will have a chance to visit the fascinating museum of renown Basque artist Chillida. Chillida-Leku is a museum and sculpture park that serves as a tribute to Eduardo Chillida’s life and work, showcasing his impressive sculptures in a beautiful natural setting. The park covers approximately 28 acres of trees, meadows, and pathways that guide visitors through the outdoor exhibition of Chillida’s sculptures.

As we arrive in Hondarribia, we stretch our legs and take our first steps on the Northern Camino de Santiago with a short climb to the Sanctuary of Guadalupe on the Jaizkibel mountain range. Jaizkibel is a prominent natural landmark in the region, offering breathtaking views of the Bay of Biscay and the surrounding coastal areas.

Hondarribia is a beautiful coastal town located in the province of Guipuzcoa, and its proximity to the water makes it a hub for fishing. As we walk along the marina and fishing port, we see traditional Basque fishing boats called “txalupas.” We’ll enjoy the waterfront area with its scenic views of the Bay of Biscay and the French town of Hendaye across the river before continuing to explore the town’s historic quarter.

This area of Hondarribia is a well-preserved medieval neighborhood with narrow streets, colorful houses with wooden balconies, and charming squares. Within the Old Town, we’ll explore the lively Calle San Pedro, filled with traditional Basque bars and restaurants serving delicious pintxos, the local version of tapas. For dinner we’ll enjoy some the local fresh seafood while gathering with our group for an evening meeting. After dinner, we make our way to the Plaza de Armas, the main square of Hondarribia, a vibrant gathering place and the site of the former Castle of Charles V.
