Sanctuary de Guadalupe to Pasajes San Juan

Chillida Leku & Hondarribia

Day 3

Accommodations: Hondarribia (B, L, D)

Walking: 12 km / 7 mi

After a fresh breakfast, we start our walk from the Sanctuary de Guadalupe to Pasajes San Juan as the yellow arrows take us a bit higher along the whaleback slopes of Jaizkibel. The highest point of Jaizkibel is the peak of the same name, reaching an elevation of 547 meters (1,795 feet). From this vantage point, on clear days, you can enjoy sweeping views of the Bay of Biscay, the French coast, and the surrounding countryside. In addition to its natural attractions, Jaizkibel is also known for its historical significance.

The mountain range played a strategic role in various conflicts throughout history and still retains remnants of old fortifications and military installations, such as the Santa Ana Battery, now a historical site and viewpoint. From here, we enjoy the views of the beaches and sea below while indulging in a fresh Fresco Tours gourmet picnic. Who doesn’t love lunch with a view?

After strolling the ridge, we work our way down to the port of Pasajes de San Juan, or Pasai Donibane in Basque, decorated with small fishing boats from another time. The village is known for its narrow streets, colorful houses, and picturesque harbor. It has retained its maritime and fishing heritage over the years, and you can still see local fishermen at work and traditional fishing boats dotting the harbor.

One of the highlights of Pasajes de San Juan is the Calle Mayor, a street that runs along the waterfront and is lined with historic buildings and lively bars and restaurants. It’s a delightful place to take a stroll, savor fresh seafood, and soak in the coastal ambiance.

Pasajes de San Juan is also home to the Albaola Sea Factory, a maritime heritage center and shipyard dedicated to the construction and restoration of traditional Basque boats. Here we can learn about the maritime history of the region, witness traditional boat-building techniques, and even take part in workshops.

We’ve completed the stage Sanctuary de Guadalupe to Pasajes San Juan, and after a zurito (small glass of beer) on Calle Mayor, we return to Hondarribia. Our Fresco Tours guides will sit down with the group for the evening meeting, where we will talk about tomorrow’s walk, and explain the map, including the terrain, the support vehicle checkpoints, and our picnic spot, to get us ready for the next day.
