Today’s walk is a little shorter to give your feet some rest, from Villafranca to Ambasmestas. After breakfast you will begin your journey out of Villafranca del Bierzo to the first town along the way, Pereje. This small village is nestled in the lush valleys of the region, and its small stone streets are pleasant and serene.
As you walk along the Valcarce River Valley, you will be able to view the stretches of vineyards that span the landscape, a beautiful and peaceful view to enjoy while walking the shaded paths. You will soon come upon another small ancient hamlet named Trabadelo. Be sure to check your Fresco Tours maps for our favorite local restaurants for when you get hungry along the trail. As you continue walking you will reach the town of La Portela, the last village before your destination for the evening.
The town, though small, has a rich history on the Camino de Santiago, like many ancient towns you will pass through. For centuries, hundreds of thousands of pilgrims have journeyed through the streets, and you get to do the same.
Finally, you will reach Ambasmestas, your destination for the evening. After a shorter day of walking you will have plenty of time to explore the streets of the town, try some local food, and maybe get to know some of the fellow pilgrims on your journey.
